Vacuum. Blot. Rotate. Get it cleaned every year or so.
Most rug care is prevention: prompt blotting, gentle vacuuming, occasional rotation. The specifics change by construction and fibre.
Everyday care — every rug
- Vacuum weekly, without the beater bar. The beater bar shortens rug life on all handmade constructions.
- Blot spills immediately with a clean, dry, white cloth. Do not rub; work from the outside of the spill inward.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 6–12 months to even out light and traffic wear.
- Use a rug pad. Extends life, reduces slip, cushions underfoot.
By fibre
| Fibre | Vacuuming | Spills | Professional clean |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wool | Weekly, no beater bar | Blot dry, cool water if needed | Every 12–18 months |
| Silk | Beater bar off; low suction | Blot only, no rubbing | Specialist every 12–24 months |
| Cotton | Weekly, gentle | Blot; can machine-wash small flatweaves cool | Every 12–18 months |
| Jute | Weekly, gentle | Blot dry; avoid water | Dry clean or gentle surface clean |
| Linen | Weekly, gentle | Blot; brief cool water OK | Every 12–18 months |
| Bamboo silk | Beater bar off; low suction | Blot only | Specialist every 12–24 months |
By construction
- Hand-knotted: the most robust construction. Vacuum, blot, professionally clean. Can be shampooed on the floor if needed.
- Hand-tufted: avoid excessive moisture that could reach the latex layer; blot spills and dry the surface promptly.
- Handloom: as wool care; no latex layer to consider.
- Flatweave: lift and shake, or beat outdoors. Reversible, so wear can be evened by flipping.
Frequently asked
How do you clean a wool rug?
Vacuum a wool rug weekly without the beater bar, blot spills immediately with a clean dry cloth (never rub), and have it professionally cleaned every 12–18 months. Wool's natural lanolin resists soiling, which is why wool rugs stay presentable far longer than synthetic ones — most day-to-day care is simply prompt blotting and regular gentle vacuuming.
Do handmade rugs shed?
New wool rugs shed loose surface fibre for the first few weeks to months — this is normal and reduces steadily with regular gentle vacuuming. Shedding is loose fibre left from shearing, not the rug wearing out; hand-knotted construction in particular cannot 'unravel' from shedding because every knot is individually tied.
How long does a handmade rug last?
A quality hand-knotted wool rug lasts 30 years to several generations with basic care, which is why antique hand-knotted rugs still trade today. Hand-tufted rugs typically serve 10–20 years depending on traffic and the quality of the latex backing. Construction, material and GSM together determine lifespan — which is exactly what our quality specifications control.
What about jute and bamboo silk?
Jute prefers to stay dry — blot spills immediately, avoid humid rooms. Bamboo silk needs gentle handling: vacuum without a beater bar, professional clean by a specialist. For high-traffic areas, wool remains the honest answer.
