Handloom rugs

Loom-woven — the quiet workhorse of contemporary rug programmes.

Traditional handloom construction produces even, refined surfaces — solid colours and textural weaves at scale, no latex, no backing to fail.

How the construction works

The cotton warp is threaded through the loom's heddles; the weaver passes a shuttle carrying weft yarn between the warp threads, using the loom's mechanism to lift alternating warps and bed each row of weft. Pile is built up by inserting extra yarn between rows and cutting or looping it to create the surface. The result is a clean-textured, uniformly woven rug with no adhesive layer inside.

Where handloom belongs

  • Contemporary solids and subtle textures where the fibre does the talking.
  • Material-forward programmes: wool-jute blends, undyed naturals, low-carbon ranges.
  • Large formats and consistent repeats across sites (hospitality corridors, workspace fit-outs).
Frequently asked

Frequently asked

What is a handloom rug?

A handloom rug is woven on a traditional loom — not tied knot by knot — producing an even, refined surface. It sits between flatweaves and pile constructions and is the workhorse of contemporary rug programmes: solid colours, subtle textures, high consistency, honest pile.

Handloom vs hand-tufted: what's the difference?

Hand-tufted is built by punching yarn through canvas with a gun and stabilising with latex. Handloom is woven — warp and weft interlaced on a loom. Handloom rugs typically have no latex, which some buyers and specifiers prefer, and they age differently: less bulky pile, cleaner texture, no backing to fail over decades.

Where does handloom belong in a range?

Contemporary programmes centred on solid colours, subtle stripe or textural weaves, and material-forward briefs (wool-jute blends, wool-linen, undyed naturals). It is also the go-to construction for large-format programmes where consistency matters.
