Glossary & specifications

Terms referenced throughout this catalogue. Use them in briefs and specification sheets — they are the words we quote against.

KPSI

Knots per square inch. The standard density unit for hand-knotted rugs. We weave 20–180 KPSI — higher = finer design, longer lead time, higher cost. 325,000 kpsm (knots per square metre) ≈ 210 KPSI.

GSM

Grams per square metre of pile yarn (not total weight). The standard density unit for hand-tufted and loop-pile rugs. 1,200 GSM is commercial grade; 2,800 GSM hospitality; 3,500+ carved luxury. Measured on a calibrated scale per piece; ±5% tolerance written on every PO.

KILIM

Flat-woven rug using slit-tapestry technique — the weft turns back at each colour change, leaving a small gap. Wool weft on cotton warp. Light, reversible, packable. Woven on a vertical loom.

DHURRIE

Indian flatweave, typically interlocked weft (no slits). We weave panja dhurries — hand-pulled with a metal claw ("panja" = claw) that compresses the weft for a dense, textured weave in loop, pebble or rope patterns.

SOUMAK

Flatweave technique where supplementary weft is wrapped around warp threads to create a raised, braided-looking surface. Often associated with Caucasian and Persian traditions. Our soumak is a 60-knot Tibetan variant in jute and wool.

BENI OURAIN / AZILAL

Moroccan hand-knotted traditions. Beni Ourain = cream undyed wool with charcoal geometric motifs, high plush pile. Azilal = ivory ground with brightly dyed accents (pink, orange, black), slightly lower pile. Both from the Atlas Mountains, both still woven by hand at PiHue.

HERATI

Classical Persian design motif — a diamond framing a rosette, often repeated across the field. Our Herati collection is hand-knotted at ~325,000 kpsm (~210 KPSI) in fine New Zealand semi-worsted wool with a silk touch.

LEFA JUTE

Hand-braided jute rope variant. "Lefa" refers to the flat braid pattern used for a thicker, more textural rug surface. Native to West Bengal weaving tradition.

PET YARN

Polyethylene terephthalate — the plastic in bottled-water bottles — spun into textile yarn after cleaning and chipping. UV-stable, fade-resistant, mildew-resistant, hand-washable. We weave it the same way we weave kilim. The resulting rug is suitable for covered outdoor use (terrace, poolside, verandah).

KPSM

Knots per square metre. The metric equivalent of KPSI. 1 KPSI ≈ 1,550 kpsm.

WARP / WEFT

Warp = the vertical threads on the loom (typically cotton for hand-knotted; cotton or jute for flatweave). Weft = the horizontal threads that pass between the warps. Knots are tied around the warps.

STRIKE-OFF

A small physical sample woven to confirm colour, construction and quality before bulk production. Typical turnaround from CAD approval: ~15 days. Our strike-offs are ~60 × 60 cm.

MOQ

Minimum order quantity. Ours is 1 piece on every construction and every fibre.

GOODWEAVE

Independent certification that verifies, through unannounced inspections at every loom, that no child labour is used in production. We are GoodWeave licensed. The programme covers home-based subcontracted looms, not just factory floor.

RWS

Responsible Wool Standard. Farm-to-rug chain of custody verifying animal welfare (no mulesing) and responsible land management. Our wool is RWS certified.

GRS

Global Recycled Standard. Chain of custody for recycled content including PET. Our outdoor rugs' PET fibre is GRS-tracked.

OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100

Chemical-testing standard verifying no harmful substances in textile products. Our dyes and finishes are Oeko-Tex certified via Hohenstein Germany.
